Four things that lift the figure
An hour of preparation is usually worth more than an afternoon of haggling.
Photograph it properly
Daylight, clean bodywork, all four corners plus the interior and the dash showing the mileage. Cars that look looked after attract more bidders, and more bidders means a higher close.
Gather the paperwork
V5C, service history, MOT certificates, receipts for recent work and both keys. Every document you can show removes a risk the trade would otherwise price in.
Sort the cheap stuff
A valet, a bulb, a missing wheel trim. Small tidy ups cost very little and stop a buyer using them as leverage once bidding is done.
Know your floor
Decide the lowest figure you would genuinely accept before bidding opens. It keeps the decision simple when offers start landing.
When to value my car
Timing quietly decides a few hundred pounds of the final figure.
Just before a plate change
Values step down each March and September. Selling in the weeks before means your car is still on the older side of the line.
Under a round mileage figure
60,000 and 100,000 are psychological cliffs for buyers. A car at 59,400 is worth noticeably more than the same car at 61,000.
In the right season
Convertibles peak in spring, 4x4s and estates firm up as the weather turns, and economical runarounds hold steady all year.
With MOT time remaining
A long ticket is reassurance. Selling with eight months left is worth more than selling with three weeks and an unknown.

Value my car questions
How do I value my car online? +
Type your registration and rough mileage into the box on this page. The vehicle is identified from the plate and you get a valuation range straight away.
How long does it take to value my car? +
Under a minute. There is no form to fill in beyond two fields, and nobody calls you unless you choose to list the car.
Is the car valuation a guaranteed price? +
No valuation anywhere is a guarantee, because condition and paperwork only get confirmed when a buyer sees the car. The range on this page is what comparable vehicles are trading at now.
Can I value a car with outstanding finance? +
Yes. Value it as normal. If you go on to sell, the settlement figure from your lender is cleared out of the sale price and the balance comes to you.
Can I value a car that has damage or high mileage? +
Yes. Traders buy plenty of high mileage cars, category vehicles and non runners. Be upfront in the listing and the bids you receive will hold up at collection.
Do I have to sell after valuing my car? +
Not at all. Plenty of people value a car months before selling it just to plan a change. Nothing is owed and nothing happens until you list it.
